At Thai Union, Environment, Occupational Health, Safety, and Energy Conservation (EHS&En) is a key pillar of our operational excellence which contributes to sustainable harmonization between our operations, our employees, ecosystems, and society. We will become the seafood industry’s leading agent of change, building a trusted and safe workplace, and acting proactively against climate change and adverse environmental impacts throughout our supply chain to concurrently drive our performance beyond compliance.
In recent years, Thai Union has prioritized developing an Environmental, Occupational Health and Safety (EH&S) Management System within the company. Implementation of Thai Union EHS Protocols ensures every Thai Union workplace operates under the same minimum EHS requirements. We systematically integrate EHS&En considerations into our business processes to overcome any challenges to building a safe workplace, and to mitigate the risk of injuries and fatalities.
Each Thai Union facility currently complies with applicable regulatory standards. We can proudly say Thai Union facilities have not incurred significant fines or non-monetary sanctions for non-compliance with environmental law and regulations*. In addition to compliance, we are in the process of establishing globally unified systems with consistent standards across the Thai Union Group to further solidify our intended position as the world’s most trusted seafood leader.
The following commitments help us identify improvement opportunities for our processes at a local, regional and global level:
- Compliance: We are accountable for compliance with all applicable EHS&En regulations and customer requirements including appropriate international standards and guidelines.

Health and safety progress
‘Trustworthy safety’ is central to every Thai Union workplace. We strive to provide safe working conditions for all our workforces and recognize that to achieve our ultimate goal of zero accidents, our daily actions – whether at processing factories, at shrimp farms or in offices – require diligent planning and management.
In 2017, our journey to “Building a Trusted Workplace in Health and Safety” continued. We maintained our occupational illness frequency rate for employees at zero. We also continued to reduce the Lost Time Injury Severity Rate (LTISR) per 200,000 worked hours by 22% (5.82 in 2017 vs 7.48 in 2016) and the Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate by 17% (0.74 in 2017 vs 0.89 in 2016).
One of our key initiatives in 2017 was launching the Center of Excellence: Environment, Health, and Safety (COE). We realize that employees’ skills and competencies are critical to building a robust safety culture at Thai Union. COE was established in February 2017 to serve as a learning hub for all Thai Union employees, with more than 3,000 employees attending various courses last year. Ensuring the issues of environment, health and safety are understood by all employees, we provided training in Thai, English, and Burmese. Recognizing there is also a need for similar improvement outside Thai Union, we plan to expand our services publicly in 2018 to serve both Thai and immigrant workers in the region. Our objective is to improve EHS awareness, skills and competencies in Thailand, especially for immigrant workers.

CLIMATE CHANGE AND ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION
Climate change is a global challenge involving economic, social and environmental issues. Oceans are also directly linked with climate change, whether through warming sea surface temperatures, rising sea levels, or ocean acidification. It is our social and environmental responsibility to act to minimize the factors responsible for climate change. Thai Union is committed to protecting the environment by mitigating risks from our consumption of natural resources and greenhouse gas emissions, especially within our organization. We are also committed to our proactive environmental sustainability 2020 targets for enhancing our environmental accounting, monitoring and mitigation plans.
GLOBAL ENVIRONMENTAL & GHG PERFORMANCE Y2017 VS Y2016
In 2017, our efforts to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions, and waste to landfill exceeded our targets as we continuously promoted, initiated and implemented the environmental and greenhouse gas accounting, audits and mitigation projects. We reduced our greenhouse gas intensity emissions by 11.43%, or about 55,489,695 kg CO2 equivalent., and reduced our water and waste to landfill by 1.40% and 34.94%, respectively, compared with 2016. The financial savings for Thai Union from these environmental reduction programs were more than USD 1.69 million.
SOLAR ENERGY GENERATION PROJECT ON PLANT ROOFTOP (SUN SEEKER PROJECT)
In 2017, one of Thai Union’s major projects for reducing greenhouse gas emissions was the first “Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) Sun Seeker Project.” The project was implemented at Thai Union Factory on the roof of the cold storage facility, with a total power capacity of 935.55 kW, or approximately 1,273,000 kWh per year, which can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 720 tons CO2 equivalent per year. The success of this pilot project serves as a model, and we plan to increase this project in other locations by at least 4 – 6 MW in 2018
OUR ENVIRONMENTAL, HEALTH, AND SAFETY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
Thai Union’s Environment, Health and Safety division works tirelessly to develop and implement stringent protocols to meet our commitments to reducing our environmental impact and providing a healthy and safe workplace for our employees, contractors and suppliers. These actions are guided by Thai Union’s Business Ethics and Labor Code of Conduct and our sustainability strategy, Alpha88 | Online CasinoSeaChange®.
These systems will help us manage our various operational practices and monitor performance in a unified manner. For instance, they will help us coordinate between Thai Union facilities to achieve our sustainability goals for the year 2020 of reducing our carbon emissions and the employees’ lost-time injuries frequency rate (LTIFR).
The framework of the Group EH&S Protocols is based on the systematic continual improvement concept. The figure below illustrates how these Protocols drive improvement.
THAI UNION ENVIRONMENTAL, HEALTH, AND SAFETY MANAGEMENT FRAMEWORK
- EH&S POLICY: A clear framework for setting objectives and achieving the effective management of environmental, occupational health and safety performance consistent with the Group’s EHS&En Policy is established.
- LEADERSHIP, CULTURE AND BEHAVIOR: Leaders at all levels visibly demonstrate continuing commitment and behaviors toward excellence in EH&S management and performance, reinforcing the EH&S culture in the organization.
- ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES: Sufficient resources and clear responsibility and accountability are allocated and defined to employees, suppliers and contractors to support effective EH&S management and effect continuous improvements in performance.
- RISK AND OPPORTUNITY MANAGEMENT: EH&S risks and opportunities associated with Thai Union operations, products and services, are managed or leveraged throughout the value chain.
- COMPLIANCE MANAGEMENT: All relevant EH&S regulations, requirements, standards, codes, are identified and complied with throughout design, construction and operations phases.
- STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENT: Stakeholders and parties interested in the business are identified and prioritized. Engagement programs are developed and implemented to ensure their concerns and interests are taken into account.
- OBJECTIVE AND PROGRAM: EH&S objectives and targets are established and coherent action plans are defined and implemented to manage EH&S risks and opportunities to improve EH&S performance.
- ACQUISITION AND DIVESTMENT: EH&S risks and liabilities are considered and evaluated as part of the merger, acquisition and divestment process, and considered as key factors in business decision making.
- PRODUCT STEWARDSHIP: EH&S impacts associated with product and service throughout its life cycle are identified, minimized, managed and further leveraged to development of new product factored sustainability enhancement.
- OPERATIONAL INTEGRITY: The EH&S risks associated with activities related to business operations are properly managed in compliance with the relevant EH&S regulatory requirements and industry best practices.
- INCIDENT REPORTING AND INVESTIGATION: EH&S incidents are reported in a timely manner, investigated, properly managed and shared across Thai Union to prevent recurrence and improve EH&S performance.
- CRISIS AND EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT: Reasonably foreseeable emergencies are identified; appropriate response measures are planned and adequate intervention equipment is provided to minimize or mitigate any adverse EH&S impacts.
- CHANGE MANAGEMENT: EH&S risks and other impacts of changes are identified and appropriately managed when planned and unplanned changes are made.
- PROJECT DESIGN, CONSTRUCTION AND COMMISSIONING: EH&S risks are managed and reduced as an integral part of all projects through design, approval, construction and commissioning.
- SUPPLIERS AND CONTRACTORS MANAGEMENT: The management of EH&S risks associated with goods and services provided by contractors and suppliers is carried out to minimize any adverse EH&S consequences.
- AWARENESS, COMPETENCY AND TRAINING: Employees and personnel working for and on behalf of Thai Union are aware of EH&S requirements, hazards, risks and controls and are competent to perform their activities in a responsible manner.
- COMMUNICATION: Effective and transparent communication to internal and external stakeholders is carried out to encourage participation in and contribution to EH&S performance improvement initiatives.
- DOCUMENT AND DATA MANAGEMENT: EH&S related information is managed and controlled to demonstrate traceability and to ensure that it is accessible and up-to-date.
- INSPECTION AND AUDIT: EH&S performance systems are verified and evaluated periodically to assess conformance and drive continual improvement.
- PERFORMANCE MONITORING AND REPORTING: EH&S performance is measured and monitored periodically to drive continual improvement.
- NON-CONFORMITY, CORRECTIVE ACTION AND PREVENTIVE ACTION MANAGEMENT: EH&S nonconformities are properly managed through the implementation of preventive and corrective actions to avoid recurrence.
- MANAGEMENT REVIEW: The overall EH&S program and performance is reviewed by management to ensure the achievement of desired outcomes and provide necessary support as required.
In order to support the implementation of EH&S Protocols, we are also developing a set of EH&S Guidelines to provide a step-by-step procedure for addressing each specific EH&S topic. The EH&S Guidelines comprise four main components: Process and Equipment Integrity, Human Well-Being, Environmental Stewardship, and Product Stewardship. All sites are expected to develop and implement their own documented procedures in accordance with each EH&S Guideline.
